UC Riverside Celebrates V-DAY 2005

A Performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” Will Raise Money to Combat Domestic Violence Against Women

(February 18, 2005)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- UC Riverside’s V-Day Campaign will present “The Vagina Monologues” to benefit the Riverside Area Rape Crisis Center, at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 in the University Lecture Hall. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased through the UCR Ticket Office, (951) 827-4331. Parking is $5.

The V-Day Campaign is a collaborative effort produced this year by the student organization Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, and supported by the Department of Women’s Studies, LGBT Resource Center, Women’s Resource Center, and ASUCR.

Launched in 1998 as a way to help end violence against women, Eve Ensler’s play the “Vagina Monologues” is a series of women speaking in passionate and graphic terms about their sexual experiences, their body image and their hopes and dreams as women. Performances at UCR in the past three years have raised more than $18,000 to help end domestic violence, said Clare Gmur, one of the student co-organizer/producers of this year’ production of the monologues.

“I think this year’s production is especially exciting — students took on the task of organizing, producing and directing the show,” Gmur said. “We wanted to honor and continue the vital work of all the women before us."
