Free Children’s Program for Healthy Living Looking for Enrollees

The Healthy Body-Healthy Mind program at UCR has openings for middle school participants.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — www.ucr.edu — Space is available for the free, weeklong middle-school summer program, Healthy Body-Healthy Mind, at the University of California, Riverside, which combines physical activity with learning. Application details are available from Linda Rankin at the ALPHA Center at (951) 827-5425 or by email at linda.rankin@ucr.edu. The application deadline is June 10.

The program, designed for students scheduled to enter 7th and 8th grades, is sponsored by the Academy of Learning through Partnerships for Higher Achievement (ALPHA) Center at UCR and is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., July 25 to July 29 at the campus Student Recreation Center.

Participating students will receive instruction in mathematics as it relates to health, in physical education as it relates to a healthy lifestyle, in self-motivation and in character development. The program focuses on developing a well-rounded individual. The program teaches health education, fitness, nutrition and a positive mental attitude.

The ALPHA Center, UCR’s primary K-12 outreach arm, was established in 1998 to increase the historically low rate of college-qualified high school graduates from inland Southern California and, once enrolled in college, to ensure their success. Student and teacher-based ALPHA programs have reached more than 119,400 students, 9,900 teachers and 845 administrators and impacted approximately 190 schools in Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial and eastern Los Angeles counties.
