Summer Program Introduces Girls to Engineering

College of Engineering Program Introduces Girls to the World Of Engineering

Girls in the sixth through ninth grade will have the opportunity to design their own products.

(June 17, 2005)

In an effort to engage more girls in the areas of science and technology, the Bourns College of Engineering and the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, will offer a two-week summer day camp designed to introduce girls to the world of engineering.

Minds for Design takes sixth through ninth grade girls through an 18-step process of conceptualizing and implementing projects of their own design. Through hands-on activities, field trips to engineering firms, guest speakers, and mentoring the girls have an opportunity to learn first-hand what it would be like to work in the field of engineering.

The program will be held from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, Aug. 1 through 12. Cost for the program is $100 plus a $10 registration fee for non-girl scout members. The deadline to apply is June 30.

For more information about the program contact Linda O'Neill, director of the Office of Special Programs at the Bourns College of Engineering at (951) 827-6379 or linda.oneill@ucr.edu, or fill out the Minds for Design application form.
