Robert Calfee, dean of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside, will lead an opening convocation from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at University Extension, 1200 University Ave.

Gloria Macias Harrison, president of Crafton Hills Community College and a UCR graduate, will talk about creating student success. Her speech is entitled, “Opening Doors.”

Dean Calfee will introduce the faculty, including two new faculty members this year: Begona Echeverria and Michael Vanderwood. Dean Calfee will also unveil framed artwork from students in the Riverside Unified School District that will hang in the Graduate School of Education.

The gathered assembly of faculty, students and administrators will also hear from UCR Executive Vice Chancellor David Warren; Graduate School of Education faculty chair Melanie Sperling; and Alexandra Lucio, a recent graduate from the credential program, who will speak about her experiences in the first year of teaching.

Finally, Dean Calfee will name Kim Evanson, a doctoral candidate at UCR, as “Teaching Assistant of the Year.”
