RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- University of California, Riverside Chancellor France A. Córdova will open the 2006-07 academic year in formal academic regalia with the “New Student Convocation,” at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 in the Student Recreation Center.

The formality will end about 5:30 p.m. with a switch to a spirited pep rally for UCR’s athletics teams, led by UCR’s Director of Athletics, Stan Morrison.

All incoming freshmen and transfer students have been invited to the event, designed to promote the shared values of the university, including free inquiry, intellectual honesty, personal integrity, and respect for human dignity. The keynote speaker is Rickerby Hinds, assistant professor of theatre at UCR and a specialist in hip hop theatre.

This is the first of several events marking the start of a new academic year. Classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 28. Over 17,000 students are expected to attend UC Riverside this year, although final figures will not be available until a census at the end of the third week of classes.

The social life of the campus will kick off with a series of events sponsored by the Associated Students Program Board, the Student Life office, and others:

UCR Block Party — Friday, Sept. 29, 5 to 9 p.m., Aberdeen Drive. The event will feature food and game booths, interactive attractions, henna tattoo artists, student dance performances by 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe and CSA Evolution, and three bands including Fiore, The Summer Obsession, and Saosin.
