KUCR Staffers Spotlighted on MTVU Awards Show

UCR radio personalities discuss "Woodie" nominees on national cablecast

(October 24, 2006)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — (www.ucr.edu) -- The KUCR studios and staff are going to be featured in a series of promotional segments and the one-hour MTVU Woodie Awards 2006 special starting Wednesday, October 25, 2006.

The MTVU Woodie Awards honor the type of alternative/independent music featured on KUCR. The KUCR segments were taped on Thursday September 28 and feature five UCR students who have music programs on the station discussing the nominees for the MTVU "Woodie" awards.

“We're very proud of the intelligence, sophistication and dedication of our students," said KUCR General Manager Louis Vandenberg. "They live and breathe the music they love. They really know it deeply. Not only are they very informed about the current artists and trends, but they have uncompromising tastes, which they assert fearlessly”

They will be sharing their knowledge and opinions with the national MTVU audience in the programs and segments.

KUCR, which broadcasts to the western region of Southern California's Inland Empire on 88.3 FM, was selected as one of six college stations in the United States featured in the awards presentation because of its national reputation for commitment to alternative and independent broadcasting.

KUCR features a wide diversity of music and public affairs programming which is unique in the Southern California broadcast market.

“KUCR is widely recognized as exemplifying the best of what student-staffed college radio offers,” said Louis Vandenberg, general manager of KUCR, “The traditions of student broadcasting at KUCR extend back to the station's founding in 1965.”

The station, now in its 40th year of operation, is one of the longest-standing student traditions at UC Riverside.
