New Child Care Facility Approved

UCR Chancellor Approves New Child Care Facility on Campus

New Building Should Open by Fall 2008

(November 7, 2006)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — (www.ucr.edu) -- UCR Chancellor France Córdova has approved the expansion of UCR’s Child Development Center (CDC) with a new facility that will double the center’s current capacity from 144 to 288 children.

The building will be constructed on a vacant lot on the corner of Watkins Drive and Blaine Street near the existing center. The administration hopes to open the facility by fall 2008.

Judy Wood, director of the center, said the building will cost an estimated $8 million and negotiations are currently underway with the architect who will design the project.

Further down the road, another new child care center is planned in conjunction with a new student family housing development near Iowa Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.; however, there is no target date for the completion of that project.

While those larger projects are underway, center administrators are taking smaller steps to increase capacity.

“We are hoping to convert one of our current classrooms into another infant/toddler classroom,” Wood said. “A second building on the center’s grounds used by the Graduate School of Education is being vacated and converted into our new kindergarten classroom.” This additional classroom will add 15 spaces.

Along with increasing the number of infant /toddler spaces at the center, administrators requested a license change that allows the facility to accept infants as young as 2 months old. Previously, the youngest they could accept were 4 months old. “There is a real need for infant spaces,” Wood said, “and we are trying to meet this need.”

The CDC, opened in 1996, is considered one of the best child care facilities in the region with ratios of one teacher to every three children in its infant program and one teacher to every 12 children in its Kindergarten.

The expansion was one of the principal recommendations made in a Jan. 2006 report issued by The Childcare Taskforce established by the chancellor and made up of faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate student representatives.

Other taskforce recommendations included:

  • Expand the hours of service from the current 7:30 a.m. — 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. -- 8:30 p.m.

  • Establish after-school programs for school-age children with pick up service and homework assistance programs

  • Develop short-term drop-in satellite childcare facilities at UCR’s Rivera Library, the Recreation Center and the Commons

  • Institute flexible scheduling to include part-time and flex-time care needs

  • Expand financial assistance programs with the goal of making childcare affordable for all UCR families.

Currently the cost of care at the CDC ranges from a high of $822 for an infant between the ages of 2 and 18 months to a low of $409 for a full day of kindergarten. Fees for the children of students are discounted and some student family members attend tuition free.

“The expansion of child care facilities is just one dimension of the family-friendly approach we are taking at UCR,” said Córdova. "We hope to soon implement other recommendations of the taskforce.”
