UC Riverside Poet Wins Prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship

Creative writing Professor Christopher Buckley is one of 189 honorees.

(April 10, 2007)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — UC Riverside poet Christopher Buckley has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

Buckley, a professor of creative writing, has published 14 books of poetry. His newest collection of poetry, “Modern History,” will be published next year by Tupelo Press. His work has appeared in such journals as The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, and The Nation.

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation provides fellowships for advanced professionals in natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and creative arts, based on distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment, according to the foundation’s web site (www.gf.org). The foundation awarded 189 fellowships this year.

Buckley said the grant of about $40,000 will enable him to take the 2007-08 year off.

The poet said he plans to spend the year catching up on his reading, everything from collections of poetry to books about cosmology and astrophysics. “That stimulates the writing,” he said. “That, and staring out the window.”
