RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — University of California, Riverside student Hector Rosales has been selected to receive the Ray M. Greenly Scholarship from Shop.org. The fund is designed to further the cause of e-commerce and the multi-channel retail industry by providing financial assistance to outstanding students.

Rosales was selected by a six-member committee made up of UCR’s Sloan Center for Internet Retailing faculty. The committee also recommended student Steve Nguyen receive an honorable mention.

To qualify for the scholarships, students must be undergraduate juniors or seniors in business administration with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, a demonstrated strong interest in e-commerce or online retailing, and demonstrated leadership in the community or on campus. Candidates must also have recommendations from instructors and must be interviewed in person by the university selection committee.

The scholarship fund was established in memory of Ray M. Greenly who served as Shop.org’s vice president of research and member services and who made significant contributions to the organization’s success. Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation, is the leading network for online retailers with 600 members including the 10 largest specialty retailers in the United States.

“We are pleased to be one of the schools selected to participate in this scholarship program and are gratified that Shop.org recognizes the need to prepare students to embark on an e-commerce career path,” said Professor Donna Hoffman, chancellor’s chair and co-director of the Sloan Center for Internet Retailing. “The fact that we had more than one eligible candidate and needed to include an honorable mention category is indicative of the caliber of student we have enrolled here.”

The winner of the scholarship will be awarded $2,500.

This scholarship fund is just one of the many benefits of having the Sloan Center located on the UCR campus. Hoffman and co-director Professor Thomas Novak moved the internationally recognized center from Vanderbilt University to UCR less than a year ago. The Sloan Center is supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and corporate partners, including founding partners Walmart.com and Lands’ End.
