"Coming Out Monologues"

"Coming Out Monologues" Scheduled April 17

UC Riverside students will present the third annual performance to observe National Day of Silence.

(April 15, 2009)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Queer Alliance of UCR and the UCR LGBT Resource Center will present the 3rd annual “Coming Out Monologues” on Friday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in recognition of the National Day of Silence.

The public performance will be held on the UCR campus in Interdisciplinary Building 1020. A suggested donation of $5 supports UCR student scholarships.

The brainchild of UCR student Rodrigo Hernandez in 2007, “The Coming Out Monologues” are modeled after Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.” Narratives written from a diversity of “coming out” experiences are read onstage by members of the UCR campus community.

Variations of “The Coming Out Monologues” have been performed on other college campuses around the nation, including at Texas A&M University, Towson University, and Cal Poly Pomona.

“The Coming Out Monologues” celebrate a diversity of voices in order to “break the silence” of those unable to be visible in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. The National Day of Silence, a project of high school Gay Straight Alliances on April 17, brings attention to the experiences of LGBT youth everywhere.

The University of California, Riverside (www.ucr.edu) is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world.
