RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- Grilled peanut butter sandwiches and a biweekly farmer’s market earned Scotty’s Convenience Store and Grill at UC Riverside the 2009 “Best in the Business” award for excellence in marketing and merchandising from the National Association of College and University Food Services.

The unique menu stemmed from UCR Executive Chef Lanette Dickerson’s desire to create a signature dish that was protein-based and would meet the needs of vegetarian customers. The sandwiches are not only tasty but inexpensive, ranging from $1.80 for regular peanut butter and jelly to $2.50 for gourmet blends with honey, raisins, apples or sweetened cream cheese.

Dean Wright, Director of Dining Services at Brigham Young University and a judge in the contest, said Scotty's "grove to the grocery" concept proved that it was an integral part of the UCR campus experience and set it apart from the other nominees.

Susan Coffman, Student Services Director for Dining Services, said the bi-weekly farmers market features a variety of fresh local produce including citrus and eggs from UCR’s own agricultural department. The next three farmer's markets will be from 5 to 7 p.m. April 30th, May 14th, May 28th. The idea will be exported to the convenience store at the Highlander Union Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 13.

“Students love the idea of buying local and appreciate our efforts to bring this these fresh products to their door,” Coffman said.

The university will receive a commemorative plaque recognizing Scotty’s achievement and complimentary registration to the 2009 NACUFS Neighborhood Market Retail Workshop pre-conference event in July, where a video of Scotty's will be shown.

Vice Chancellor Al Diaz said he knows to expect the best possible outcomes from housing and dining services. “I know how hard our dining team has worked to provide high quality food services in a diversity of venues,” Diaz said. I am proud of the whole team’s accomplishments but would like especially to recognize the innovation of the leadership team headed by Andy Plumley.”
Plumley is the assistant vice chancellor for housing services administration.

Scotty’s opened in November 2007 in the courtyard outside Glen Mor campus apartments providing students with a late-night venue to purchase snacks and beverages. It is open from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and managed mostly by students, which is one of the keys to the store’s success.

“Student managers keep the atmosphere young and customer friendly. They are able to get feedback from the students to assure we are carrying the products students are interested in buying,” Coffman said.

Scotty’s sold more than 10,000 grilled sandwiches last year and did $645,617 in gross annual sales.
