UC Riverside School of Public Policy on Hold Due to Budget Cuts

Decision will save at least $300,000 per year

(May 21, 2009)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White announced today that he was putting the proposed School of Public Policy on hold until the campus budget situation improves.

He told a campus community gathering that the suspension of start-up efforts for the school approved by UC Regents in September would save at least $300,000 a year.

This was one of $17 million in cuts across the campus he announced, saying such actions, and probably $2 million more, are necessary to preserve the core academic function of teaching admitted students.

“The gravity of the situation we are in means it will affect all of us,” he said. “We have to ask everyone on this campus to do a little more –- and I know that we are already running so hard our tongues are hanging out.”

He said it was difficult to tell Anil Deolalikar, a professor of economics who has led the charge on the public policy initiative, that progress must be stopped for now. “Anil wrote a note back to say, ‘I understand.’” Visibly moved, Chancellor White said that will be the model for how the campus will pull together to manage through the economic downturn.
