RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) – The University of California, Riverside will hold a Chancellor’s Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 17 to increase the amount of merit scholarships that allow the best and brightest scholars, artists, leaders and volunteers to pursue their academic dreams.

Chancellor Timothy P. White, who has made increasing scholarship funds a priority for the campus, is inviting alumni and community members to join him at the dinner, to be held at UCR’s new Highlander Union Building.
Cost is $125 per person, of which $75 is a tax deductible contribution toward scholarships. The reservation deadline is Oct. 8.

The UCR Alumni Association and the Foundation Board of Trustees are sponsoring the event, which includes cocktails, dinner, and UCR’s annual Alumni Awards of Distinction and the unveiling of the latest UCR medallion recipient.

Distinguished alumnus and golf luminary Gary McCord and outstanding young alumnus and physician Cindy Le will be honored as recipients of the 2009 Alumni Awards of Distinction; and the family of Milton W. Stratford will receive the medallion.

Gary McCord is an American professional golfer, commentator, author and actor. During his years on the PGA Tour, he had just under two dozen top-10 finishes. In 1986 McCord joined CBS Sports as a golf analyst, a capacity in which he still serves. Gary hosts the Gary McCord Golf Classic at UC Riverside which is in its 22nd year and has raised over $700,000 for student-athlete scholarships.

Cindy Le received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences and completed the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences in 1999.
While at UCR, Le received the Alumni, Chancellor’s, Rosemary Schraer and Brithinee Scholarships. She is currently the Attending Psychiatrist on the Inpatient Unit at the UCSF, San Francisco General Hospital. Her areas of interest are violence reduction and management of psychosis on inpatient psychiatric units and gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender issues in psychiatry.

In 1977, Stratford became a founding trustee of the UCR Foundation Board. He served as chairman from 1986 to 1988, was an inaugural UCR Laureate in 2000, a member of the Chancellor's Associates, Citizens' University Committee, where he chaired the scholarship committee, and was founder of the Charles Sherman Hoyt, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund, one of the first endowed funds established in the UC Riverside Foundation. A member of the Watkins Society, Stratford passed away in June 2008.

Since 1991, Milt, his daughters Carol Stratford Blake and Janet Davis, his second wife Nancy Stratford, and the Poorman-Hoyt Stratford Foundation (the family’s foundation) have made gifts of more than half a million dollars to the Charles Sherman Hoyt, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Since 1981, the Hoyt Scholarship has funded 50 UCR students.
