RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — More than 400 students from Riverside and San Bernardino counties will put their skills and imagination to the test at the second annual MESA Robotics Invitational at the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) at UC Riverside (UCR) Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Events will be held at the Bourns College of Engineering and University Lecture Hall.

The event is hosted by the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) Schools Program at UCR, in conjunction with the San Bernardino Community College District and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League (FLL).

The events will consist of three challenges. In the first challenge, middle school students must use Lego robotics kits to score baskets, unopposed and against another robot in a basketball game. The high school challenge will pit robots against each other in soccer matches, vying for the coveted “MESA Cup.” The FIRST Lego challenge will require robots to traverse a course that simulates real-world transportation and infrastructure challenges.

Winners of FIRST Lego challenge qualify for the Southern California FLL championship, which will be held Dec. 5-6, 2009, at Legoland in Carlsbad, Calif.

These challenges are the culmination of months of work by participating students, who work in teams to accomplish the many tasks required. These innovative, hands-on experiences are designed to inspire students to pursue higher education and study in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering.

MESA is a nationally award-winning program designed to inspire students who come from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged circumstances and is open to all students in grades 6-12. UCR’s MESA Schools Program serves more than 700 middle school and high school students from Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Based in Manchester, N.H., FIRST was founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen to create accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. The San Bernardino Community College District actively promotes the mission of FIRST in San Bernardino County.

The University of California, Riverside (www.ucr.edu) is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students. The campus opened a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
