RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Students at the University of California, Riverside are continuing their efforts to raise money for relief efforts in Haiti in the wake of the 7.0 earthquake that devastated much of the island nation on Jan. 12.

Since Feb. 1 several student organizations have raised more than $5,000 from the sale of wristbands bearing the words “Help Haiti, Heal Haiti.” Students hope to raise as much as $20,000, which will be sent to UNICEF, said student organizer Ghanem Hussein. The wristbands, which sell for $5 each, will be available the week of Feb. 8 at the bell tower between noon and 2 p.m. They are available in three colors: half red and half blue (representing the colors in Haiti’s flag), solid white and solid blue.

Groups participating in the sale include the Muslim Student Association, Students for Justice in Palestine, MEChA, Pakistani Student Association, Afghan Student Association, Katipunan, Abyssinian Student Union and UNICEF at UCR.

Students also are collecting clothing, toiletries, snacks and flashlights for the relief effort.
