UC Riverside Rated One of the World’s Best

The London-based Times Higher Education ranking places UCR 117th.

(September 17, 2010)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Riverside ranks 117th in the London-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings, placing it among the world’s top-tier institutions of higher education. The Times rankings are regarded as one of the most influential in the world.

Universities were rated in five categories to determine the top 200 in the world: citation impact (research influence), 32.5 percent of the total score; teaching (learning environment), 30 percent; research (volume, income and reputation), 30 percent; international mix (staff and student ratios), 5 percent; and industry income (measuring knowledge transfer), 2.5 percent.

UCR received a score of 78.3 out of 100 for citations, a category that assesses a university’s influence on research by measuring the frequency with which its researchers are quoted by other scholars.

The Times ranking is consistent with the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities, which in August placed UC Riverside in the 101-150 range. The Shanghai Jiao Tong annual rankings weigh science achievement, especially awards, citations and scientific papers published in the prestigious journals Science and Nature.
