Convocation Set for September 22


New Student Convocation to Mark Start of 2011-12 Academic Year

Annual event for first-year students to be capped off by pep rally and celebration at the HUB

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- University of California, Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White will address the assembled class of first-year students at the annual New Student Convocation on Monday, September 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.

The convocation kicks off the 2011-12 school year and is one of several student-centered events held to mark the new academic year.

Following a procession of the faculty in formal academic regalia, White will welcome the students to the campus and speak on topics including campus diversity, commitment to service, and student-advocacy on behalf of the university.

Other speakers include Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Jim Sandoval, Faculty Senate Chair Mary Gauvain, Alumni Association President David Cunningham and ASUCR President Stephen Lee. The UCR Highlander Band will play and the Highlander Pipe Band will lead the processional. UCR student LéCourtenay Long will sing the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.

UCR Athletics Director Brian Wickstrom, who is also in his first year at UCR, will finish up the event by leading the R’side Rally. He will introduce the coaching staff and student-athletes and get the newest Highlanders fired up for the upcoming intercollegiate athletic season.

Following the convocation, students will walk over to the Highlander Union Building (HUB) for the R’Side Celebration. The student-only event features food booths, music and other entertainment.

UCR will welcome about 3,300 students into three residence halls on Sunday, September 18th. Move-in times and approach routes to campus have been staggered to help minimize congestion, but streets are still expected to be busy throughout the day. Instruction begins on Thursday, September 22nd.
