Media Briefing: IntelliShare Project Begins Road Test at UCR

(March 17, 1999)

Representatives of the news media are invited to drive and participate in the launch of the latest in automotive transportation technology - a shared fleet of 15 Honda electric cars - in a new research project at the University of California, Riverside.

A news briefing on the IntelliShare project by officials of UCR and the Honda Motor Company is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, at University Village in Riverside.

IntelliShare is an advanced technology that shows promise as an alternative transportation system to ease traffic congestion and reduce air pollution. Shared vehicle systems are based on the concept of public car sharing in which different drivers use each car several times a day. In the UCR demonstration project, 15 Honda EV Plus cars will be available to UCR faculty, staff and students at three stations on and near campus. UCR and Honda engineers will operate the system to evaluate how it works in urban communities and to refine the smart technology.

Time/Date: 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 24

Location: University Village (corner of University Avenue and Iowa Avenue in Riverside)

Visuals: IntelliShare cars will be available for members of the media to see, photograph and drive. Smart card and touch-screen computer technology will be demonstrated and will be available for reporters to try.

Directions: Highway 60 to University Avenue in Riverside. Exit University Avenue and travel west to University Village entrance. Turn right into University Village. Demonstration will be conducted near the corner of University Avenue and Iowa Avenue.
