Area High School Students Recognized for Achievement

(October 13, 1999)

More than 180 students from 60 high schools in Riverside County will be honored for their academic achievement, leadership and citizenship at the 14th annual Scholars' Banquet sponsored by the Press-Enterprise newspaper and the University of California, Riverside.

The banquet, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 in the UCR Student Recreation Center, will recognize 183 students and their parents.

Students were chosen to receive the 1999/2000 High School Scholars' Awards by their principals. They represent the top 1 percent of their high school classes.

Established in 1986, the program's goal is to highlight the quality of public education by recognizing outstanding scholarship.

Serving as keynote speaker for the banquet will be UCR alumnus John Leyman, now a certified financial manager for Merrill Lynch, who will share his college experiences with the students. Leyman, who graduated from UCR with a bachelor's degree in political science and administrative studies in 1990, served as student body president for external affairs while at UCR.
