UCR Researcher Ramon Rhine Passes Away at Age 72

A noted researcher at the University of California, Riverside, Ramon J. Rhine, passed away Nov. 9 at his Riverside home. He was 72. Preston-Simons Mortuary will handle arrangements.

Rhine collaborated with well-known primate researcher Jane Goodall and once appeared on the NBC television show "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom." His career was marked by impressive breadth, in his double expertise in Social Psychology and Primatology. At the time of his death, he was a professor emeritus of psychology.

He arrived at UCR in July of 1964 and retired in June of 1991. Among his many honors is a 1988 Guggenheim fellowship for his study of baboons in the African wild. He served on the UCR Academic Senate, the faculty's primary decision-making body, both before and after his retirement in 1991. Prior to his service at UCR, he was a scientist with the Rand Corp.

Rhine received his B.A. from UC Berkeley, his M.S. from the University of Oregon and his Ph.D. from Stanford, all in psychology. He is survived by his wife, Doris Rhine of Riverside and three children.
