UCR Recognizes Malcolm X on 75th Birthday

(April 26, 2000)

Students at the University of California, Riverside will celebrate the 75th birthday of Malcolm X at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in Watkins 1000 on the UCR campus.

The keynote speaker for this free and public celebration is Augustine Kposowa, associate professor of sociology at UCR. His talk will be titled, "By Any Means Necessary: Malcolm X and His Legacy." Malcolm X, a leader in the Civil Rights movement, was assassinated in 1965 at the height of his public struggle for racial and economic justice, said Ken Simons, program coordinator. Born Malcolm Little, he died with the Muslim name El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. He would be 75 on May 19 were he still alive.

The African Student Programs office is organizing the event, with help from the African Student Alliance, the Pan African Theme Hall, the Center for Ideas & Society, the Office of Campus Relations, the Muslim Student Union and the departments of Sociology and Ethnic Studies.

The event is free, but campus parking costs $3.

Additional information is available from Ken Simons, African Student Programs, (909) 787-4576.
