Eugene Godfried, community organizer, music producer, and radio journalist, will give a free talk at the University of California, Riverside at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 19 in room 1501 of the Humanities and Social Sciences building.

Godfried's talk is open to the public, sponsored by the Department of Ethnic Studies. Parking on campus costs $3 per day.

Born in the nation of Curacao Dutch Antilles, Godfried has worked for the past 26 years to promote popular culture and Caribbean identity. He is currently Director of the Caribbean Division of Radio Havana, Cuba and an organizer of labor unions throughout the Caribbean region.

He is producer and promoter for the Cuban group Conjunto Chappott? y sus Estrellas. The thirteen group members are direct musical and ancestral descendants of AfroCuban musicians responsible for perfecting and popularizing the dance music known as "son."

In 1999, Godfried was a visiting scholar in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His research areas include the study of celebrations of Carnival as expressed in Caribbean and Latin American nations. He is also interested in the US African American community and its civil rights movement.
