New UCR Development Executive Officer Appointed

(May 29, 2000)

Pamela Hillman, formerly vice president for institutional advancement at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, has been named associate vice chancellor for development at the University of California, Riverside.

Hillman, 53, will begin June 1 at UCR. She succeeds Irving Hendrick who had served as interim assistant vice chancellor for development following his retirement as dean of the School of Education.

The associate vice chancellor will provide leadership for campus fund-raising initiatives that have grown significantly in recent years and include development staff at each of the schools and colleges. She will have a close working relationship with the UCR Foundation, the nonprofit fund-raising arm of the University. The foundation, led by a board of 86 trustees, currently has assets of more than $84 million and annually distributes millions of dollars in scholarships, grants and other support for the campus.

"We have a lot of work cut out for us for the future and for the enhancement of a very fine institution. Her job will be an integral part of this. The board is eager for us to get going," said Henry Coil, chairman of the UCR Foundation Board of Trustees and president of Tilden-Coil Constructors in Riverside.

"Pam Hillman is a spectacular addition to our campus. Her professionalism and team spirit will serve us very well as we move to the next levels providing critical support to this rapidly growing campus," said Connie Kravas, vice chancellor for university advancement.

"I'm very excited about coming to UCR, particularly at this time in the history of Riverside. UCR is in the forefront of news about the growth and development of the region. I'm also excited because I have felt an extraordinary sense of warmth and welcome," Hillman said.

The new associate chancellor was selected in a national search. A committee headed by Jacques Yeager, former UC Regent and civic leader and foundation board member; and Hendrick was responsible for interviewing candidates. The committee included faculty , staff and community representatives.

Hillman has been at Mount St. Mary's College since 1994. There as vice president, she was responsible for all advancement activities including alumni, community and public relations and development. She led a $40 million capital campaign.

Prior to Mount St. Mary's, Hillman was director of development at The Anderson business school at UCLA and was director of annual giving at Cal Tech. She has been active in professional advancement organizations. She also had a career as a professional singer from 1966 to 1977.

Hillman has a Master of Science degree in Educational Counseling from California Lutheran College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from California State University, Northridge.

She and her husband, Daniel Fineman, professor of English at Occidental College, reside in Eagle Rock and have two daughters.
