KHIZ Channel 64 to be TV broadcast partner

(September 25, 2003)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Sept. 25, 2003 — (www.ucr.edu) The University of California, Riverside today announced it has entered into a partnership agreement with KHIZ Channel 64, which allows expansion of the live television coverage of UCR’s NCAA Division I athletics program.

Under the terms of the three-year agreement, KHIZ will broadcast 17 games, which are produced by Charter Communications. KHIZ will also have the option of broadcasting UCR’s weekly 30 minute Coaches Show and away games for UCR Men’s Basketball. KHIZ broadcasts are scheduled to begin December 5th. Viewers can find schedule and provider information at http://www.khiztv.com.

The agreement with KHIZ provides UCR the potential of reaching approximately 2.5 million viewers as compared with its current capability of about 100,000 viewers. It also bring the campus closer to achieving the UCR Highlander Sports Network vision of being accessible in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties as well as portions of Ventura and San Diego counties.

“There are numerous benefits for our fans, the players and the community in this agreement,” said Stan Morrison, UC Riverside athletics director. “Our many alumni fans will now have nationwide access to our games via satellite, and players whose families weren’t able to travel to campus to see them play will be able watch the live coverage on TV.”

The seven year-old UCR Highlander Sports Network provides live broadcast coverage of UCR home games for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s baseball. Longtime professional baseball announcer, Dale Parsons, does the play-by-play for the Network’s Riverside based radio station KPRO AM 1570. Dan Hubbard, a seasoned professional baseball play- by-play broadcaster, and San Antonio Spurs radio analyst Dusty Garza lead the production of UCR’s TV coverage on Charter Communications.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity with UC Riverside,” said Nicholas White, KHIZ TV chief executive officer. “The Inland Empire TV market has tremendous growth potential and the growing prominence of the UCR athletics program fits our station’s plan to bring exciting programming to our viewers.”
KHIZ is a full-powered independent broadcast television station serving the Los Angeles DMA, including San Bernardino, Ontario, Los Angeles, Riverside and their surrounding communities. KHIZ currently reaches nearly 2.5 million homes over the air, on cable, and via satellite on DirecTV and the Dish Network.
“This agreement is a significant endorsement of UCR Athletics by our corporate partners,” said Cliff Dochterman, UC Riverside associate athletic director. “The expanded exposure throughout southern California gives us a chance to highlight our wonderful student-athletes and our tremendous University, and will provide us the opportunity to increase regional and national corporate sponsors in our sponsorship program.”

UC Riverside became a National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I campus in the 2001-2002 season. A member of the Big West Conference, UCR features 17 intercollegiate sports including: baseball, softball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross-country, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field.
