UC Riverside’s Dean of Engineering Accepts Position at Buffalo

Satish Tripathi Accepts Provost Post at State University of New York, Buffalo

(April 21, 2004)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — www.ucr.edu — Satish K. Tripathi, dean of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside has accepted the post of Provost of the State University of New York, Buffalo. The appointment is effective July 1.

“This high-level administrative appointment at New York State's largest public university acknowledges Dean Tripathi's leadership in higher education and his considerable achievements at UC Riverside,” said Chancellor France A. Córdova, of UC Riverside.

Tripathi, the Johnson Professor of Engineering and a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, has led UC Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering since 1997. He oversaw the growth of the college of engineering from 22 faculty members on his arrival, to today’s 65 faculty, who offer an intellectually rich menu of academic programs, degrees, and research directions. The College has climbed to among the top 50 percent in the U.S. News &World Report Best Engineering Graduate Schools rankings, from an unranked position three years ago.

Under Tripathi's leadership, the College established three new departments, three new graduate programs, two new undergraduate programs and interdisciplinary research centers in intelligent systems, nanotechnology, bioengineering and embedded network systems. He has established significant industrial partnerships and the Bourns College of Engineering led the campus last year in fund raising.

Tripathi continues to publish and conduct research. He has more than 200 scholarly research articles to his credit and has had a very strong record of externally funded research programs (more than $10 million). Tripathi has supervised 23 Ph.D. students, seven postdoctoral students, and more than 35 M.S. and undergraduate students.

Tripathi served as Acting Executive Vice Chancellor from March through June 2002. He has earned widespread support and respect from faculty and staff across the campus for both his leadership skills and his personal qualities, which will be an asset to him and his campus as provost at the university at Buffalo, according to a statement from Córdova.

The University of California, Riverside (www.ucr.edu) is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students.
