RIVERSIDE, Calif. (May 5, 2004) -- Jasmine Guy, a star and writer for the television show, “A Different World,” will be signing her first book, Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Village Bookstore.

The book traces the difficult life of Afeni Shakur, mother of the late Tupac Shakur, during the civil rights movement. During the 60s and 70s, Afeni Shakur combined her activism with motherhood. The book touches upon themes such as love, race, drugs and music. She expresses her love of Shakespeare and tells how her son’s work gave her hope and courage. She tells about her participation in the Black Panther Movement.

Guy has written previously for the television show "A Different World" when she starred as Whitley Gilbert. She earned six consecutive NAACP Image awards in this role, one for each season. She is a regular in "Dead Like Me," playing a tough-talking meter maid. Some of her other credits include NYPD Blue, Melrose Place, Touched by An Angel and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter. Guy is very active in her community where she contributes time to “A Place Called Home,” which is a gang intervention safe house for children.
