UC Riverside Biology Major Loses Life Trying to Help Another

Services are Scheduled for Friday and Saturday

(January 18, 2005)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- A UC Riverside student died Sunday from injuries received when he stopped to help another motorist.

George Ragheb, 20, was a biology major in his third year on campus. On his way home to Riverside after teaching a religious education class, he stopped to help an accident victim on Highway 60, and was struck by a passing motorist.

That impulse for service was typical, his friends said. He was fun-loving, modest and devoted to his faith, working through Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church in Santa Ana. He was also an active member of the Coptic Club at UC Riverside.

“It’s never easy to lose a student,” said Susan Allen-Ortega, dean of students at UC Riverside. “And in this case it is especially sad to hear that he lost his life trying to help someone else.” She said she is in touch with the family and has extended condolences on behalf of the campus.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22 at Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church, 4405 West Edinger Avenue, Santa Ana. More information is available on the Web at http://www.archangelmichaeloc.org/ or via phone, (714) 775-1234.
