Around the bell towers, speakers, flyersMore than 20 Occupiers gathered at the bell tower over the lunch hour, chanting about rising tuition, wealth inequality, and their right to protest. Another 20 to 30 people stopped to  listen. At the same time, numerous student groups – from MECha, fraternities and a cycling club to proponents of Israel and Palestine – set up tables in the springlike sunshine and chatted with passersby about their organizations and points of view. Television crews from NBC-Channel 4 and Telemundo interviewed students about their frustrations over rising tuition, and Craig Fiegener from NBC grabbed an impromptu interview with Chancellor Timothy P. White as he chatted with students around the bell tower.

At one point an Occupy protester lit incense behind a small red tent. Others handed out fliers announcing a continuing demonstration on Thursday and a nationwide strike of students for May 1.

Highlander editor makes comments about “Fix UC” plan

Chris LoCascio, president of Fix UC and the editor of the Highlander newspaper at UC Riverside, spoke briefly to the Regents. His plan proposes the elimination of tuition and student loans.  He said UC is a  “pioneer” in academia, now should be a pioneer in funding higher education. UC President Yudof said he is “extremely impressed” by proposal because it is homegrown, developed by students.

Fix UC Proposal Causes Discussion

Some UCR students have proposed a new system of funding UC tuition that would ask graduates to give back a percentage of income over 20 years. They propose that it be presented to the Regents during the public session of the meeting held on campus. It is an outside-the-box proposal that would be a huge departure from the way the system is funded now, and it is causing some discussion online. A Press-Enterprise story gives details:
