Riverside,Calif. (www.ucr.edu) -- Alumni returning for this year’s Homecoming will get more than remembrances of things past; they’ll get an opportunity to sample today’s classroom. The Alumni Association of UC Riverside is launching its first Alumni College, a series of lectures designed to introduce former students to new subjects and teaching techniques.

The theme for this year’s Homecoming is “Reconnect, Reunite and Reminisce!” In keeping with that theme, Bill Cole, the organizer of the program, says the association wants to help members reconnect with the school in a more personal way.

“The Alumni College showcases what’s happening now on campus as compared to when they were here,” Cole says. “It’s a way to show how teaching methods and materials have changed. It’s a chance to forge a closer relationship with our alumni. We are very excited about it.”

This year, Homecoming runs Thursday, January 19 to Saturday, January 21. The Alumni College, also called Classes Without Tests, is offering four lectures on the final day of the celebration. They are:

  • “Writing for Our Lives: A Sampler by UCR Authors,” Maurya Simon, professor of the Creative Writing, in Humanities 1500 at 11a.m

  • “Nanotechnology and What it Means for the Inland Empire,” Dr. Robert Haddon, Distinguished Professor and Director, Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Bourns Hall, B118 also at 11 a.m.

  • “How Riverside’s Sewage Becomes Orange County’s Drinking Water,” Dr. Marylynn Yates, professor of Environmental Microbiology in Entomology Conference Room 161 at 1 p.m. and finally

  • “Sexual Selections: What We Can and Can’t Learn About Sex from Animals,” Dr. Marlene Zuk, professor of biology, in Entomology Conference Room 161 at 2 p.m.

The sessions are free and open to the public. For reservations call (951) 827-2586 or (800) 426-ALUM (2586).
