UCR Today: New News, New Look. Go!

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — The University of California, Riverside is celebrating black history with a month long lineup of events to honor the contributions of African Americans past and present to the growth and development of the United States.

Unless otherwise noted, events are free and open to the public. Parking on campus is $6 per day per vehicle, $5 on weekends and after 4 p.m. and may be purchased for shorter periods at either permit dispensers or the University kiosks at the University Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard entrances.

UCR events commemorating Black History Month include:

• Wednesday, Feb. 2: Elaine Brown, former chairperson of the Black Panther Party, is scheduled to speak at the University Lecture Hall at 8 p.m.



• Saturday, Feb. 5: Celebration of the Tuskegee Airmen and their contributions to breaking race barriers for African Americans. The event, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m, will feature Trey Ellis, who wrote the screenplay to the HBO drama, “The Tuskegee Airmen” starring Lawrence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding, Jr. Call in advance as space is limited (951) 827-3221. General admission for dinner is $45, $15 for students and minors.



• Wednesday, Feb. 9: Creative Writing Department’s Writers Week is featuring Meri Nana-Ana Danquah in Humanities 1500 at 1 p.m.



• Saturday, Feb. 12: A blues benefit performance by Charlie Jene at 8 p.m. at the University Theatre. Tickets are $20. Proceeds benefit African Student Programs events and scholarships.



• Wednesday, Feb. 16: Libraries’ Author Series, Ralph Crowder will read from his book “John Edward Bruce: Politician, Journalist and Self Trained Historian of the African Diaspora,” from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Tomás Rivera Library. Crowder will hold a book signing at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Village Bookstore, 1299 University Ave, Suite 101.



• Tuesday, Feb. 22: Oscar nominated movie, “Ray,” starring Jamie Foxx, will be shown at the University Lecture Hall at 8 p.m.



• Wednesday, Feb. 23: Representatives of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will speak at the International Lounge from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The speech is titled, “Speak Out: What Is Your Definition of Being Black? Who Can Use The “N” World? Who Decides?”

The month of February is significant and recognized in African American history for the birthdays of great African American pioneers and institutions. These include the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Eubie Blake, the NAACP and the first Pan African Congress.
