Through poetry, songs performed by the UCR Choral Society, and presentations by local elementary school students, this event will spotlight King’s accomplishments that helped make civil rights a national priority in the 1950s and ‘60s and earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
Following the tribute, there will be a silent march to UCR’s Carillon Bell Tower in the center of campus followed by a candlelight vigil.
The program will be presented by the Pi Epsilon chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. King was a member of the fraternity, which was established in 1906 and was the country’s first African American intercollegiate fraternity. UCR’s Pi Epsilon chapter was founded in 2003.
