Schools Science Fair is Back

Riverside Schools Science and Engineering Fair Projects on Display at UCR

More than 200 science and engineering projects will go on display Feb. 15 from the best that Riverside Unified School District students have to offer.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — — The public is invited to view the more than 200 science projects on display from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday Feb. 15 at the 19th annual Riverside Unified School District Science and Engineering Fair at the University of California, Riverside.

Project viewings will be in the Bear Cave, at the Pentland Hills Residence Hall, after which winners will be announced at a 6 p.m. ceremony at the University Theatre.

The science and engineering fair projects cover areas as diverse as environmental sciences, biology, behavioral sciences, engineering, chemistry, and physics. UC Riverside faculty and graduate students, Riverside Unified School District and Riverside Public Utility officials will judge entries from grades kindergarten to 12.

Award sponsors include UCR and Riverside Public Utilities. Winners will advance to the Inland Science and Engineering Fair at the Damus Building at the National Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino on April 17 and 18, 2007. From there, winners will advance to the State Science Fair in Los Angeles May 21 and 22, 2007.

Pamela Clute, Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Partnerships, will be the keynote speaker during the Feb. 15 awards ceremony. Opening and closing remarks will be given by Superintendent, Susan J. Rainey and School Board Member, Lewis J. Vanderzyl from RUSD; and from UCR associate deans Jory Yarmoff of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and Chinya Ravishankar of the Bourns College of Engineering.

Parking for project viewing is available in Lot 26, next to the UCR Sports Complex at Blaine Street and Canyon Crest Drive. Shuttles will take visitors to the viewing area at the Pentland Hills Residence Hall. Parking for the awards ceremony is available in Lot 6. Maps and detailed parking information are available at the information kiosk at the campus entrance at University Avenue or on the campus map and the Transportation and Parking Services web sites. Parking on campus is $6 per vehicle per day and may be purchased for shorter periods at the information kiosks. Parking after 4 p.m. is $5 per vehicle for the day.
