UC Riverside Buys University House at Highlander Ridge

Current tenants are mostly UCR students

(April 27, 2007)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- UC Riverside purchased a 220-unit apartment complex near the campus, giving the university more flexibility when it comes to student housing.

The university paid $31.4 million for the complex at 3429 Canyon Crest Dr. Escrow closed on April 20. The name of the complex is University House at Highlander Ridge.

The university will honor the terms of all existing leases. And because about 200 of the 220 tenants are UCR students, they will feel little impact from the sale, said UCR’s Director of Housing Andy Plumley. They will write their rent checks differently. And, he said, if a resident calls 911, campus police will respond rather than the Riverside Police.

The complex — set on 8.73 acres — has a swimming pool, spa, outdoor barbecues and a small recreation building. It is near the campus, across the street from Canyon Crest Family Student Housing.

University officials were contacted in January to gauge interest in purchasing the complex. “Universities always generally take a look at anything adjacent to the campus that is for sale,” Plumley said. The purchase gives the university options about future use of the complex.

About half of UC Riverside students live in off-campus apartments, about a quarter commute and a quarter live on campus, Plumley said.

The University of California, Riverside ( is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students. The campus opened a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
