UC Riverside Fund-Raising Efforts Receive National Recognition

The “111 Facts” student recruitment viewbook also takes a national award

(June 8, 2007)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( -- UC Riverside has earned two national awards for fund-raising and marketing efforts from the Council for Advancement in Support of Education (CASE).

One is the 2007 CASE-WealthEngine Award for Educational Fundraising: Overall Improvement, which recognizes UCR’s exceptional fund-raising improvement over the past three years. In 2003-04, the university raised $11.4 million in private support. The next year that figure went to $20 million and in 2005-06, it jumped to a record $40.1 million.

Institutions cannot apply for this award. Instead, CASE processes data available from the Council for Aid to Education on higher education institutions and conducts its own extensive analysis. This year, just 26 awards were granted in 2007 for overall improvement. Five of those were in UCR’s category of public research/doctoral universities.

“This is a well-deserved recognition of UC Riverside's tremendous improvement in fund raising over the past three years," said Bruce Darling, the University of California's executive vice president for University Affairs. "I have been very impressed with UC Riverside's effectiveness at reaching out to a wide group of donors. Those efforts are clearly paying off."

This is the first time that UCR has won a national performance award for fund-raising, said UCR’s Vice Chancellor for Advancement William Boldt. "I am incredibly proud of UCR and the great strides that this campus has made in terms of private fund raising. It is also a strong reflection of the impact and evolution of UCR at a national level," Boldt said.

He said it could not have happened if Chancellor France Córdova had not committed to providing new resources for fund raising and marketing, which has helped drive a steady rise in results.

The chancellor gave credit to the people working in development. “This is indeed a great honor for UCR and it is due to the efforts of our talented, hardworking development team," she said.

Boldt and Susan Harlow, the associate vice chancellor for Development, will travel to Chicago in July to receive the award at the CASE International conference.

CASE also gave a silver award to “111 Facts,” the new student viewbook that was sent to all prospective students. Many people on campus contributed to the colorful content for that 52-page book. The subtitle is “Cool Things Smart Students Should Know about UC Riverside.”

Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs LaRae Lundgren and Pat Daly, director of Enrollment Management Communications, led the student affairs team. The UCR Office of Strategic Communications and Pentagram, an outside design firm, also contributed to developing the publication.

CASE is an international organization for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, and development. CASE membership includes more than 3,200 educational institutions in 55 countries around the world.

The University of California, Riverside ( is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students. The campus opened a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
