RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( — UC Riverside Chancellor Timothy White announced Wednesday that Daniel G. Aldrich, III, will serve as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement starting Oct. 27.

Aldrich is currently a Senior Development Associate in Institutional Advancement in the Office of the UC President, as well as statewide Director of the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS), a program that serves advanced high school students. It is the largest program of its type in the nation.

Aldrich has been affiliated with the University of California all of his life. “I bleed blue and gold,” he said. At UC Riverside, he will serve on an interim basis at 80 percent time until a permanent appointment is made following a national search.

“Dan Aldrich’s appointment is not one of management, but rather leadership and I have vested him with full license, responsibility, authority and accountability for decision making,” White said. “Dan will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to help align and advance UC Riverside. I am very pleased about this appointment.”

The Advancement division includes fundraising, alumni and constituent relations, event management and protocol, and strategic communications.

For Aldrich, a return to Riverside has symmetry. He is a native, and spent his first 10 years running around the area where UCR is now, which was covered with orange groves, as well as sagebrush. His father, Daniel Aldrich, II and the founding chancellor of UC Irvine, started his academic career at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Riverside. “Homer Chapman and Al Boyce recruited my father,” Aldrich said, speaking of early figures from UCR’s history. The Aldrich family lived down the street from the Bourns family, who went on to become supporters of the campus and namesake for the Bourns College of Engineering.

“I’m excited about this, for a whole lot of reasons," said Aldrich, 64. "First, I think your new chancellor is awesome,” he said of White. “He has an interest in building a team that will be supportive of the students and the faculty and the community.”

Aldrich will earn $188,000 annually from UCR, which reflects an 80 percent appointment. The Office of the President has requested that Aldrich continue some of his duties in Oakland, and he will be paid separately for that time, which will amount to about 20 percent of his work hours.

“This allows me to come back to Riverside and also make a contribution to the larger community and the university as well, at the conclusion of my career,” Aldrich said. It wonderfully excites me and gives me an opportunity to give back,” he said. “It really is an opportunity to come full circle.”

Aldrich takes a post that has been held by Susan Harlow since June of ’07. Harlow was appointed after the departure of William Boldt, who served as the vice chancellor from Sept. 2004 to June of 2007.

The University of California, Riverside ( is a doctoral research university, a living laboratory for groundbreaking exploration of issues critical to Inland Southern California, the state and communities around the world. Reflecting California's diverse culture, UCR's enrollment has exceeded 21,000 students. The campus opened a medical school in 2013 and has reached the heart of the Coachella Valley by way of the UCR Palm Desert Center. The campus has an annual statewide economic impact of more than $1 billion.

A broadcast studio with fiber cable to the AT&T Hollywood hub is available for live or taped interviews. UCR also has ISDN for radio interviews. To learn more, call (951) UCR-NEWS.
