Math, technology programs for girls

Math, Technology Programs at UCR For Middle School Girls

The University of California, Riverside is offering free summer mathematics and technology programs for middle-school girls who may be interested in pursuing careers in those areas. The deadline for applications is Friday May 24. Applications and program details are available from the sponsor, the ALPHA Center at UCR.

Two weeklong sessions are offered in each program.

§ The mathematics sessions are titled Girls Excelling in Mathematics with Success (GEMS) and are designed for girls entering 7th and 8th grades. They are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, June 17 to 21 and June 24 to 28, at Gage Middle School in Riverside. The sessions focus on the importance of mathematics to college and business success, and on the importance of learning mathematics, community service, mentoring and women supporting women. § The technology sessions are titled Girls Achieving Technological Excellence (GATE) and are designed for girls entering 7th and 8th grades. They are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Aug. 12 to 16 and Aug. 19 to 23 at Sproul Hall on the UCR campus. GATE introduces participants to technology, technology-based careers and women in technology in a fun and casual setting. Contact Judy Lee at the ALPHA Center, (909) 787-5425.
