UC Riverside Police Department Launches Facebook Fan Page

The page offers a way to get the news out to students, faculty, staff and the community.

(March 29, 2010)

UCPD Riverside has launched a Facebook fan page, designed to keep students, faculty, staff and the UCR community up-to-date on crime alerts, safety tips and special events.

“We wanted to find a way to communicate with those we serve. Because so many people already use Facebook on a daily bases, it seemed like an excellent option for getting the word out,” said Wade Stern, a police officer in the crime prevention unit.

The page can be found by typing “University of California Police Department, Riverside” in the Facebook “Find people and more” search option.

UCPD Riverside Facebook fans receive updates, posted to their own Facebook accounts and can also share comments and links. They can also subscribe, via SMS (short massage service) to get cell phone texts notifying them each time a new item is posted on the site.

UCPD joins the Merced, Los Angeles and Berkeley campuses, each of which are also using Facebook to tout the information, services and programs offered by their campus police departments.

Stern said he hopes the Facebook site will be a good way for UCPD Riverside to connec with the community it serves.

“Our patrol officers are the most visible representatives on campus, but we have a range of other programs that help people take a proactive role in their own safety. We plan on using this site to tell them about those programs,” he said.

It is important to remember that campus emergencies should continue to be reported through the 911 emergency call center, said Stern. In addition, UCPD Riverside still maintains a campus-based Web site at UCPD Riverside, which provides extensive information about the department.

Generally, being a Facebook fan provides much more limited access to personal Facebook pages than being a friend. As with all fan pages, UCPD will not gain access to privileged profile or activity, and UCPD will does not receive a Live Feed of personal postings. Users are encouraged to set their Facebook privacy preferences to their personal comfort level.
