RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( -– John Levin, a UCR professor who leads an initiative on community colleges and access to higher education, has been named as interim dean for the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside.

He will start his duties July 1, replacing Dean Steven Bossert, who after six years as dean of the college is returning to his research and teaching.

Levin will continue to lead the California Community College Collaborative (C4) during his interim term as dean.

“Professor Levin is a widely published scholar and an acknowledged expert on community colleges. He was also unanimously supported by the faculty of the school,” said Dallas Rabenstein, UCR’s Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. “This is a one year appointment while we do a national search for a new dean. We will look for highly qualified candidates who will understand the needs of our region.”

Rabenstein offered his thanks for the leadership of Dean Bossert. “He has increased the diversity of the faculty during his time here and he also recruited John Levin and started the community college initiative.” He announced the change in a note to the school’s faculty and staff Thursday.

Levin’s most recent research addresses non tenure track faculty in universities, faculty and institutional practices in Mexican state universities, faculty identity in colleges and universities and graduate students of color.

He has been a professor previously at the North Carolina State University and the University of Arizona. He was a college instructor and administrator for a combined 23 years in Canada.
