RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( -- The University of California, Riverside ranks among the top 150 universities in the world, with chemistry research placed even higher, in the top 75, according to the annual Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The annual rankings weigh science achievement, especially awards, citations and scientific papers published in the prestigious journals Science and Nature. University of California campuses generally do very well by those measures, and UC Riverside has long been ranked as a productive campus when it comes to faculty citations and publications.

“UC Riverside’s ranking is impressive,” said Dallas Rabenstein, UCR’s executive vice chancellor and provost. “Given our size, I think these ratings clearly indicate we are building excellence here.”

When it comes to scientific publications and honors, UCR’s Department of Chemistry, which produced one alumnus who won a Nobel prize recently, is ranked in the top 51-75 departments worldwide.

The campus is ranked in the top 75 to 100 for research in physics and astronomy, the natural sciences and mathematics; in life sciences and agriculture; and for research in the subject of computer science.

“I think these rankings, which are highly respected, are informative and meaningful in the scientific community,” said Rabenstein, who is a frequently-cited researcher and a distinguished professor in the Department of Chemistry, where he has been on the faculty since 1985.
