Environmental Health and Safety Facility Planned

UC Riverside will host a community meeting to discuss the project on Sept. 16.

(September 10, 2010)

RIVERSIDE, Calif. ( – UC Riverside will build a new Environmental Health and Safety facility on a 2.7-acre site along Watkins Drive, next to the UCR Corporation Yard – a different location than originally announced. The campus will host two community meetings and an open house to discuss the project.

The first meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. in Bannockburn Village, 3615 Canyon Crest Drive, Room J-102, and will provide the community with an opportunity to learn about the project, ask questions and provide input. The second meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 18 in the same location.

An open house at the existing EH&S facility will be on Sept. 30, during which EH&S staff will offer tours and explain how the facility operates. The new facility will house the campus fire marshal and staff training facilities, as well as serve the campus as the central location for materials and products that require special delivery or disposal. The open house will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the EH&S facility, located on South Campus Drive.

The EH&S building was to have been located on the west campus, near Highway 60 and the Martin Luther King Boulevard off-ramp. However, recent changes to the master plan, including the future home of the new medical school, resulted in the EH&S building being displaced from its intended site.

The new location, near the intersection of Watkins Drive and Valencia Hill, was among the sites previously considered for the facility several years ago.
