RIVERSIDE, CA – ( -- University of California, Riverside Chancellor Timothy P. White is resting comfortably today after insertion of a stent into an artery in his heart. The stent placement was performed this morning during a previously scheduled diagnostic procedure at the Heart Institute at Riverside Community Hospital.

Cardiologist Joseph Quan, M.D. of the Riverside Medical Clinic performed the procedure, which he described as a cardiac catheterization routinely used with patients having a previous history of heart issues.

“The procedure went very well,” said Quan. “We noticed a partial blockage in the circumflex artery and inserted a stent, which is a typical response to these types of situations.” Quan said White’s prognosis is excellent: “There were no other detected blockages or tissue damage.”

Following standard procedure, White is being held overnight at Riverside Community Hospital for observation. White plans to rest at home over the weekend and return to work on Monday, February 14. Colleagues who spoke to him this morning said White was his usual, animated self – joking about using the occurrence and his Valentine’s Day return to work as an opportunity to educate the public about heart health.

“Thank you to everyone in the greater Riverside and academic community for their concern,” said White. “I’m feeling well and look forward to returning to work next week.”

White previously had two heart attacks and bypass surgery about six years ago, but has since been in excellent health and continued his work as a high-profile leader in higher education.
