Weed Control Technologies Offer Promise of Environmental Benefits

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – August 29, 2002 – The University of California, Riverside (UCR) today announced it has received a donation of intellectual property from the DuPont Company for a novel class of herbicides the University hopes to further develop and eventually license for commercial use.

“UCR is pleased to join an elite group of research institutions involved in this type of collaboration on intellectual property,” said Steven R. Angle, dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. “Our researchers have the opportunity to build on the work done by DuPont and to explore the potential for a licensing opportunity for the campus. This has the potential to be a significant financial benefit for UCR and to offer environmental benefits to society.”

DuPont cited UCR’s strong program in agricultural sciences, its excellent reputation for scientific research, a close technological fit with existing on-campus research, and confidence in UCR’s strong competency in technology transfer as providing the framework for the donation decision.

“At DuPont we’re committed to support academia and to foster dialogue with top universities,” said Thomas S. Woods, director, Intellectual Assets Management, DuPont Intellectual Assets Business. “We look carefully for an institution with a good fit for the technology to be donated, and we work closely with the donee to make this a positive and meaningful research experience. We’re very pleased to have this opportunity to recognize the outstanding research work underway at the Riverside campus.”

UC Riverside is one of three University of California campuses offering agricultural and natural resource sciences, as well as Cooperative Extension research and outreach programs. The College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is recognized internationally for its research and educational programs in the agricultural, biological, and physical sciences.
