Services Set for UCR Computing Administrator Larry Sautter

(October 16, 1999)

Larry L. Sautter, who guided the University of California, Riverside through the personal computing and information technology revolutions of the 1980s and 1990s, died Friday after a long battle with cancer. He was 52.

As associate vice chancellor for computing and communications, Mr. Sautter directed UCR's widespread adoption of computer technology and, later, the campus' development of the infrastructure to link to the World Wide Web. He joined UCR in 1981 as director of the academic computing center, was appointed director of computing and data communications in 1987 and in the mid-1990s became associate vice chancellor for Computing and Communications.

In the latter position, he directed diversified computing services to support UCR's teaching, research and administrative functions, as well as a complex voice and data communications network.

Mr. Sautter was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsil in May 1998 and had been in a coma since February. He died at the Magnolia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center early Friday morning.

"Larry's contributions to UCR were monumental," UCR Chancellor Raymond L. Orbach said in a message to the campus. "Under his leadership, the face of computing and communications were transformed on our campus...But he was more than a vital member of the UCR administrative team - he was a beloved friend to all those who knew him."

Mr. Sautter's wife, Cheryl Sautter, is an administrative budget officer at UCR. "Over the past eight difficult months, our friends from UCR and family have shown us so much love by taking time to assist with care giving," she said. "They made it possible to bring Larry home and have a special four months with him."

Born on April 13, 1947, in Scotia, Neb., Mr. Sautter earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Kearney State College (Nebraska) in 1969 and a master's degree in business administration and chemistry at Colorado State University in 1973.

He was academic coordinator for the University of Nebraska computer network from 1973 to 1976. From 1976 to 1981, he was assistant director of the Computing Services Office at the University of Illinois, Urbana.

An avid car aficionado and audiophile, Mr. Sautter also served in the youth mentoring program at University Heights Middle School in Riverside. He enjoyed playing tennis and visiting the mountains of Idyllwild.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4495 Magnolia Ave., Riverside.

Mr. Sautter is survived by his wife Cheryl of Riverside; their 3-year-old son Marek; his mother, Ila Sautter, of Kearney, Neb.; half brothers Todd, Brian and Terry Sautter, of Kearney, Neb.; sister- and brother-in-law Linda and Paul Stewart, of Riverside; and nieces Colleen Stewart and Patricia Sorokowski and nephews Andrew Stewart and Jeff Stewart, all of Riverside.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Larry Sautter Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the UCR Foundation, 252 Highlander Hall, Riverside, CA 92521, or the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, United Way, or the Cornelius Kooiman Scholarship Fund at UCR.
