UCR History Professor Wins "Choice" Award

(January 7, 2000)

A book by Rebecca "Monte" Kugel, associate professor of history at the University of California, Riverside, has won the Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Book Award for 1999.

"To Be the Main Leaders of Our People: A History of Minnesota Ojibwe Politics, 1825-1898," was published by Michigan State University Press last year and is listed in the January edition of the magazine as one of the year's outstanding titles.

Choice Magazine, which offers current reviews to academic libraries, recognizes books that combine distinguished scholarship and presentation with recognition as an important, often first, treatment of a specific subject, said Irving E. Rockwood, editor. The magazine selects a number that compares to the top 10 percent of the books reviewed during the year, Rockwood said.

Kugel's book uses the Ojibwe's own words to shed light on their understanding of their history and on the ways their political system functioned. The book expands the parameters of how oral traditions can be used in historical writing and sets forth new i nformation about a complex series of political events from a Native American point of view.
