Free Health Careers Conference Scheduled for April 29 at UCR

Planning for a career in medicine or health will be the focus of a conference for high school juniors and seniors and college students on Saturday, April 29, at the University of California, Riverside.

The 16th annual Health Careers Conference: Preparation and Survival Skills, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Life Sciences 1500 on the UCR campus, is free of charge. The conference is an opportunity to explore a variety of medical and allied health careers, interact with health professionals and learn about college entrance requirements for such fields as medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, osteopathy, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, veterinary medicine, medical technology and pharmacy.

Kicking off the conference will be a keynote address by Dr. Samuel E. Dey, Jr., M.D., medical director of the Dogon Psychiatric Medical Group and Geriatric Psychiatry Program at San Bernardino Community Hospital. Following his presentation will be panel presentations on physical therapy, urology, podiatry, physician assistantship, dentistry and pharmacy.

A free lunch will be provided. During lunch, admissions officers from health professional schools and programs and representatives from diverse health fields will be available at information tables to visit with students.

Afternoon sessions include tours of UCR scientific laboratories, as well as sessions on the professional school admission process, effective college survival skills and professional school perspectives from students. The day will conclude with drawings for a free mountain bike and a certificate for a free KAPLAN course.

The conference is sponsored by the UCR Career Services Center's Underrepresented Students' Career Development Program. Pre-registration is required by April 24. To register or get more information, call the UCR Career Services Center at (909) 787-3631.
