Free health careers conference set for April 28 at UCR

Planning for a career in medicine or health will be the focus of a conference for high school juniors and seniors and college students on Saturday, April 28, at the University of California, Riverside.

The 17th annual Health Careers Conference: Preparation & Survival Skills is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Life Sciences 1500 on the UCR campus. There is no admission fee and parking in lot 6 is free of charge.

The conference is an opportunity to explore a variety of medical and allied health careers, interact with health professionals and learn about college entrance requirements for such fields as medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, osteopathy, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, veterinary medicine, medical technology and pharmacy.

Kicking off the conference will be a keynote address titled "The Different Hats You Wear" by Dr. Joseph A. Bailey, an orthopedic surgeon. Following his talk will be panel presentations by health professionals representing the fields of clinical and forensic psychology, obstetrics, radiation medicine, physical therapy, family medicine and dentistry.

A free lunch will be provided. During lunch, admissions officers from health professional schools and programs and representatives from diverse health fields will be available at information tables to visit with students.

Afternoon sessions include tours of UCR teaching and research laboratories, as well as sessions on the professional school admissions process and effective college and professional school survival skills.

The day will conclude with drawings for a free KAPLAN course and a bicycle.

Pre-registration is required by April 23. Registration forms are available at the UCR offices of the Career Services Center, African Student Programs, Chicano Student Programs, Native American Student Programs and the Division of Biomedical Sciences.
