RIVERSIDE, CALIF. ( — Jack Azzaretto, dean of UC Riverside Extension and vice chancellor of public service and international programs, was recognized as a finalist at the Inland Empire Leaders of Distinction 2004 awards ceremony Friday, July 30 at the Riverside Convention Center.

Azzaretto was honored for his outstanding leadership in the public sector and his impact on the quality of life in the Inland Empire.

“It is easy to sail a ship through calm waters, but to maintain a steady course through stormy seas is the art of a true leader. UC Riverside Extension has such a leader at its helm.” said awards emcee Larry Marino.

Through Azzaretto’s vision and entrepreneurial leadership, he has: doubled UC Riverside Extension’s budget; diversified revenue streams; created robust reserves; increased overall enrollments by 22%; established international satellite learning centers in Korea and China and domestic learning centers in Temecula, Chino and Coachella Valley; created a student-friendly learning environment; integrated technology into the teaching and learning environment; diversified Extension’s international student base; diversified career and instructional staff; and built a culture of integrity, academic excellence and service. Azzaretto accomplished these achievements despite troubles that have arisen from the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, the SARS epidemic, the rising cost of living, increased unemployment and state and federal budget cuts.

“I am grateful and honored to have been nominated, and it is a bonus to have been selected as a finalist,” Azzaretto said. “It is especially significant that I was nominated by UC Riverside Extension staff, who are dedicated to offering excellent educational opportunities for people of all ages and different nationalities.”

The Inland Empire Leaders of Distinction awards luncheon is an annual event sponsored by The Business Press.
