UC Riverside Opens New Academic Year With Convocation Ceremony

Convocation Part of Series of Events to Welcome Estimated 17,600 Students

University of California, Riverside Chancellor France A. Córdova will open the 2004-05 academic year in colorful academic regalia with the “New Student Convocation,” at 5 p.m. Monday, September 20, in the Student Recreation Center gymnasium.

All incoming freshmen and transfer students have been invited to this ceremony, which is designed to promote the shared values of the university free inquiry, intellectual honesty, personal integrity, and respect for human dignity.

The ceremony will begin with a formal procession of faculty and administrators. Dr. Josh Kun, assistant professor English, will deliver the keynote address.

This is the first of several events marking the start of a new academic year. Classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 23. Approximately 17,600 students are expected to attend UC Riverside this year, although final figures will not be available until the end of the third week of classes.

The social life of the campus will kick off with a series of events sponsored by the Associated Students Program Board, the Student Life office, and others:

UCR Block Party — Friday, Sept. 24, 5 to 9 p.m., University Avenue and Canyon Crest Drive intersections. The event will feature food and game booths, interactive attractions and student dance performances. There will also be live performances from bands The Like and Sahara Hotnights and the featured band, Phantom Planet, which is known for "California," the theme song for the television show "The OC." UCR Showcase — Monday, Sept. 27, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Belltower Lawn. UCR athletes and athletics teams will be introduced the campus community. The event also features contests, giveaways and a BMX stunt team. Free.

Drive-in Movie — Tuesday, Sept. 28, 7:30 p.m., Shrek 2; 10 p.m., Spiderman 2. A car is required. Free.

Student Organization Activities Fair — Wednesday, Sept. 29, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., UCR Commons Mall/Belltower Lawn. UCR student organizations will present opportunities for students to get involved. Free.

Wednesday Nooner — Wednesday, Sept. 29, noon- 1 p.m., Belltower Lawn. The first concert in this series, which brings live bands to campus. Free.

Comedy Show — Wednesday, Sept. 29, 8 p.m., University Theatre. Featuring comedian Dustin Diamond, former cast member of the television show “Saved by the Bell.” Free.

Welcome Week Concert — Thursday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m., Student Recreation Center. Featuring the band Jimmy Eat World. Cost: $15/general admission from Ticketmaster. UCR students may purchase tickets for $9 at the University Theatre box office.

In addition, a Resident Welcome Week will be begin on Sept. 18 on Move-In Day and continues through Sept. 24. UCR Housing Services will sponsors a variety of programs and activities for students who live in the campus residence halls, apartments and family housing.
