RIVERSIDE, Calif. - — University of California, Riverside officials announced today that Marcia McQuern, former editor and publisher of the Riverside daily newspaper, The Press-Enterprise, has been appointed the campus executive director of media relations and marketing.

McQuern, who has extensive experience in the newspaper industry and who served as president of the California Newspaper Publishers Association in 2001-02, will oversee UCR’s Marketing & Media Relations Office and Creative Design Services, with a combined total of 10 staff members. She will manage UCR’s media relations, serving as chief spokesperson for the campus, directing Internet communications efforts, providing editorial leadership for the campus magazine, and administering the publication design and video production units of the campus.

The appointment is effective Jan. 10, 2005.

“Marcia’s exceptional leadership skills and vast knowledge of the news business will be invaluable as UCR continues to expand and develop new educational and research programs,” said William G. Boldt, vice chancellor for university advancement. “This campus has so many wonderful stories to tell about our extraordinary students and outstanding faculty, as well as the many community service activities they undertake. Marcia is exactly the right person to help us convey this news.”

At The Press-Enterprise, she had previously served as executive editor, managing editor/news, city editor, Sacramento correspondent, special projects reporter, Riverside County government reporter, Riverside city hall reporter and business-labor reporter.
