Experts available for Mother's Day stories

(May 7, 2001)

University of California, Riverside faculty experts are available to add depth to stories about Mother's Day and the concept of motherhood.

Jan Blacher, professor of education. Blacher is conducting an ongoing study of families of children with severe disabilities and how mothers in such families must deal with the need to coordinate a mix of doctor's appointments, specialized treatment, home life, and sometimes careers. She is known nationally for her research on mental retardation and other developmental disabilities and has been funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development since 1982. Over the years, Blacher has served as consulting editor for the American Journal on Mental Retardation and Mental Retardation and is currently on a National Academy of Sciences panel investigating disability determination for mental retardation.

Ross Parke, professor of psychology. Parke studies how mothers and fathers differ in the way they rear their children and how those differences affect they way children treat their peers. He studies how parents as role models and as managers of their children's peer relationships differ between mothers and fathers. His research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Karen Pyke, professor of sociology. Pyke has done research on the children of Asian immigrants and finds much conflict around the images of family presented in the mainstream culture and their own immigrant family life. Mother's Day's emphasis on an expressive display of love captures one such conflict. Asian cultures tend to stress a form of love focused on doing things for one another and providing support, rather than displays of affection, such as greeting cards and flowers.
